i ♥︎ colours
Recently, I was thinking about my favourite things. Things I buy, collect, hobbies; things I somehow gravitate towards. And I came to the conclusion that what they all have in common is their colour. In fact, I think what pulls me towards many of my favourite things is, above their shape, texture, or purpose, their colour. My whole discover page on instagram is a grid of hair dyeing videos and people knitting swatches in different colours of yarn.

It’s not a secret that I’m an avid hair-dyer. I had stuck with teal blue for over a year before changing my hair to the current greenish shade, but prior to that long blue episode I would change my hair colour every few weeks. Two of my friends in the second year of uni joked that every time they saw me my hair was different, another friend said that she could never spot me in the crowd, because she never knew what colour to expect. I love having vividly coloured hair, I love just seeing it. Especially since my hair has gotten long, sometimes I look at a strand of my hair and all the different hairs being different shades of the same colour. Dyeing it with direct dye is also incredibly fun – dumping a whole bottle of brightly coloured goo on my head, then seeing water turn that colour when I wash it off. And then I see that colour every time I look in the mirror!
Another hobby of mine is knitting,
and I have to admit, sometimes I want to get a specific yarn just
because I like its colour even before I have a specific item to make
with it in mind. Then when I buy it, I love holding a skein of a colour I
love. I also got back into making things with embroidery floss –
bracelets and keychains – and got a huge box of little bobbins in
every colour I could need. It’s so fun to knot little knots and make
patterns or real-life pixel art. Again, very colour centred, do you see
what I’m getting at?

I wouldn't say I'm the most fashionable person, nor am I very knowledgable on the topic or following trends in the fashion world. But I like putting together a fun outfit, it's something that helps me get out of the house and get in a better mood. I don't shop or thrift very often anymore, but when I do I often go for pieces that are in colours I love. My wardrobe used to be very monochrome, and while I still often stick to more neutral colours, now it's full of colour and patterns.
Then there are little things – nail polish, clothes, socks, packaging, mugs, I’ll buy anything if it’s a colour. I like. Not literally, but unfortunately I am an easy target for advertisers. Put a pretty colour on the box and I might just get it for that. I’m pretty aware of my consumer habits and it turns out the driving force behind wanting to get a lot of the things I do is the colour of it.
It's not that this is a very original experience, but I've been thinking about my love for colours a lot recently and blogs are for yapping about whatever is on your mind.
